Herbert Badham had a familiar relationship with Sydney’s beaches, parks and streets, which is reflected in his paintings of everyday city life. Badham served in the Navy during World War I and then studied at the Sydney Art School with Julian Ashton and George Lambert.

During the 1930s and 40s he was influenced by the modernist artists. His paintings, such as Hyde Park, are valuable records of everyday urban life in Sydney in the first half of the twentieth century.

Badham exhibited regularly throughout his career and with the Society of Artists from 1927 until his death. He published two books on Australian art, A Study of Australian Art in 1949 and A Gallery of Australian Art in 1954.
